Maritz Travel Partners with Big Brothers Big Sisters to Create Memorable Travel Experiences

Since 1904, Big Brothers Big Sisters has been changing children’s lives by matching them with caring adults to guide them on a path to success. Every day, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Missouri (BBBSEMO), serves young people, ages 5-25 living in St. Louis City and St. Louis County; and St. Charles Jefferson, Cape Girardeau, and Scott counties. BBBSEMO provides support to 1600 kids and teens in active matched with adult mentors.

When children and teens have the influence of a caring adult, they are more likely to avoid risky behaviors and focus on academics. BBBSEMO can proudly say that the youth actively enrolled this year had a 93% high school graduation rate with the support of its organization and help from a child’s parents and teachers.

Not only does a “Little” feel a benefit from the BBBS organization, but the gratification of being a “Big” is also rewarding.

Vice President of Guest Services at Maritz Travel, Tina Bach, is a supporter of the BBBS organization and thoroughly enjoys her experience as a mentor to a Little at BBBSEMO.

“I’ve been matched with my little sister Selest, for 2.5 years and she is 8 years old now,” Bach states. “The BBBS community has given me so many opportunities and Selest, and I are the perfect match! We love spending time outdoors, reading and going to the movies. She’s not just my Little Sister; she is part of my family. Selest wants to be a doctor one day to help people.  She has a big heart! The first day I met her Mom, she said ‘Tina, I’m so excited for you and Selest to make special memories together.’  I’ll never forget her words and every outing we share I send her Mom photos of the memories.”

At Maritz Travel, our mission is to transform people and help them reach their potential through shared experiences.  This will be the third year in a row that Maritz Travel will be providing just that to winners of our Maritz Travel and Big Brothers Big Sisters Travel Experience in partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Missouri.  The goal of the initiative is to further the impact of Big Brother Big Sister relationships through shared travel experiences.

Since 2016, matches with a minimum of 5-years together have had the opportunity to apply through an online application to take part in this scholarship opportunity. The application includes essay questions around the impact of their BBBS match on their lives. Some questions include:

  • How has this relationship impacted your life?
  • Why do you want to travel together and how would it benefit you?

Each year, a five-person selection committee, which consists of two BBBSEMO representatives and three Maritz Travel representatives, will evaluate submissions based on originality, evidence of teamwork, and their ability to express perceived benefits of participation.

This year, we received a great number of creative submissions, and there will be 5 matches selected to experience a new city thanks to Maritz Travel, our helpful supplier partners including the Fairmont Chicago Millenium Park hotel, and BBBSEMO.  The prize packages include two-night/three-day hotel accommodations in select cities, a transportation stipend, tickets to three (3) local attractions, and a $150 Visa gift card for additional expenses.

The experiences will take place in select cities for participating winners who will travel between June-August of this year. The selected Bigs and Littles of the Maritz Travel and Big Brothers Big Sisters Travel Experience will explore and create new lasting memories together.
